Sin cines (Without Cinemas)

Without Cinemas is a documentary project about the demise of cinemas. Taking Madrid as a case study, this research questions the metamorphoses of our cities. Why are so many cinemas closing down? What are these cultural buildings being turned into? What use are they? What does the public want? And what does a world without cinemas mean?

The artist constructs the documentary in a process-based way, collecting sounds on the one hand (interviews and situations) and recording images on the other (shots of cinemas that have closed, that are closing, that are going to close, archives...). It also includes stop-motion animation, such as the animated writing of letters in the city.

The film was shot in analogue to better capture the evocation of history and the vulnerability of cinema in the images. The creator will also work on the film medium itself, altering the images by scraping or using natural or chemical processes, seeking to provoke resonances with the alteration of memory or with its resistance.

This project is itself an act of resistance, in which Anne Sophie wants to express the need to defend the magic of immersion in spaces dedicated to feeling, experiencing, learning: the desire to keep on dreaming.
