Hasta que el lugar se haga improbable is both a film and a heroless epic. 

Horacio is a 30-year-old man, who wakes up on the morning of what will be his last day of work cataloguing archives for a group of researchers, who are studying the melting glaciers of the North Pole. In what is a Kafkaesque act of faith, Horacio must live out his last day of work in this monotonous office, surrounded by the costumbrismo of papier-mâché, wisdom teeth, as he attempts to avoid the transition towards what many of us consider to fall within the category of “adulthood”. 

Hasta que el lugar se haga improbable is also spoken film, a magic trick, a blank cast list, a PowerPoint, countless budget items for the most varied of circumstances, sent emails and drafts of emails, great coffee, mediocre coffee and coffee that has gone cold, short meetings and longer meetings, a feather that was almost lost and then found in a pocket, a music producer who said he the ideal composer for this film, which (he was told) would (apparently) not have a soundtrack, a folder of reference photos organised into sub-folders tagged with categories including: Magdalena Orellana 2021 Hasta que el lugar se haga improbable, Birds, Credits, Costumes, Horacio, Light, Magic, North Pole, Researchers in the North Pole, Miscellaneous Paintings, Infraordinary, Beach, Teresa, Perspectives, Secretary, Avril, Filmed Letters, People, Text, Dentist’s Surgery, General magnetism… basically, a whole range of things.

BIO

Magdalena Orellana (Buenos Aires, 1990) lives and works in Madrid. She studied at the Buenos Aires University of Design, Architecture and Town Planning and the Madrid Film School (ECAM). In 2020, she finished her postgraduate studies at the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola within the Creation programme (Donostia-San Sebastián). She has taken part in various art residencies, including the UnionDocs Collaborative Studio (New York), Artists-in-Residence (CA2M/La Casa Encendida), Ikusmira Berriak (SSIFF/Tabakalera/EQZE), and MRG Work (Márgenes Festival/La Casa Encendida). Some of her work has been shown at the Film-Makers' Cooperative (New York), Círculo de Bellas Artes (Madrid), Cineteca Film Archive (Madrid), CCCB Barcelona Contemporary Culture Centre (Barcelona), Tabakalera (Donostia-San Sebastián), among others.

RESIDENCY

Magdalena Orellana is one of the four selected artists-in-residence for audiovisual projects that are currently underway, as part of the joint programme by Cineteca film archive and Matadero Madrid's Centre for Artists in Residence.
